IntegraMed America, Inc. is an exclusive supplier of physician practice management products and services for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) specialists, reproductive endocrinologists and other clinical practices involved with treating infertility. IntegraMed supports its physican practices with strong consumer-oriented products, such as the Company's award-winning website, and helps drive clinic volume through such services as direct links to clinics and on-line appointment scheduling capabilities. Infertility, defined as a lack of pregnancy following a year of unprotected sex, afflicts about 6.1 million couples in the United States, or about 10% of the reproductive age population. ART is defined as any procedure by which the gametes are manipulated outside of the body. Thanks to rapid advancements in diagnosis, fertility-related technology, surgical techniques, and emerging insurance coverage mandates, more than 70,000 babies are born by ART each year in the US, including 45,000 from in vitro fertilization (IVF). In 2001, the latest year for which statistics are available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that ART accounted for approximately 1% of total US births.
